TítuloVoting in Violent Contexts: Evidence from Mexico
Resumo

Recently, there has been a substantial increase in studies on the effect of criminal violence on electoral and non-electoral political participation in different contexts. Several of these studies have included the case of Mexico due to its high levels of criminal violence in recent decades. This work aims to contribute to the discussion of how criminal violence can affect the rate of electoral participation, through the study of the 31 municipalities that make up one of the most violent regions of Mexico: Tierra Caliente. Using a multilevel regression model, we test the negative effect of violence on voter turnout. In addition, we find that the institutional capacities of the municipality and the concurrence of local elections with federal or governor elections have a significant influence on the number of citizens who decide to go to the polls on the election day.
