Avaliação: Prácticas, espacios y naturaleza: construcción de saberes y conocimientos científicos en espacios globales. – Making science in an entanglement perspective. Martius’ Work on Palms in Progress

This paper aims at taking a deeper look into the individuals and their work, which gave birth to the scientific community in Bavaria, Germany, Europe and Latin America in the first half of the nineteenth century. By examining the members of the scientific expedition composed by Johann Baptist von Spix and Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1817-1820) and, in particular, the methods and scientific practices (observing, collecting, cataloguing, conserving etc.) applied by these naturalists, it seeks to show how in the first half of the nineteenth century science and scientific thinking gained momentum, and how these were appropriated in Bavaria, Germany and Europe. In addition, the panel assays a closer analysis of botany and zoology employed in order to provide a better understanding and appropriating of extra-European/tropical spaces. I also seek to trace back the diffusion-techniques of the scientific/artistic results by scientific publications. In that respect, I want to reconstruct the process of fostering of knowledge areas and collective memories through scientific practices. I do this by having a closer look on Martius’ work on palms which he developed being deeply impressed by this plants since he set foot on Brazilian soil.
